Metal Earth Seismic Survey Truck

Metal Earth Seismic Survey in Sudbury!

You may have seen a group of large trucks set up along local roads or highways in Sudbury. They are vibroseis trucks from SAExploration that are being used for special seismic tests to visualize Earth's structural features to a depth of 40-50 km. It is part of the 7-year Metal Earth project at Laurentian University's Harquail School of Earth Sciences and its Mineral Exploration Research Centre.

Seismic Surveys Underway

Seismic Surveys Underway

The 2D seismic component of the Metal Earth research project led by the Mineral Exploration Research Centre in the Harquail School of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University is currently underway. Pictured above are four vibration trucks on the 130 km long Chibougamau seismic line. The crew consists of 44 people working 24 hours per day. We anticipate completion of approximately 1000 kilometres of 2D seismic acquisition across the Southern Superior Province and Sudbury by the end of November.

The Harquail School: Who we are and what we do

Laurentian University's Department of Earth Sciences was renamed to the Harquail School of Earth Sciences in September 2016, the Harquail Family invested $10M into Laurentian University’s Department of Earth Sciences and the $104M Metal Earth project commenced.

Successful PhD defense

Dr. Taus Jørgensen successfully achieved his PhD in Mineral Deposits and Precambrian Geology from Laurentian University on March 28, 2017. Dr. Jørgensen's topic was titled the "Evolution of the Sudbury Igneous Complex Southern Metamorphic Aureole and Control on Anatexis".
