MERC - Metal Earth Short Course at NEOMMS, Kirkland Lake

New Insights into Crustal-Scale Influences on Gold and Base Metal Endowment in the Superior Craton and the Abitibi Greenstone Belt

MERC Short Course, October 6, 2025 | Northern College campus, Kirkland Lake, Ontario

Northeastern Ontario Mines and Minerals Symposium (NEOMMS) - https://northernprospectors.ca/north-eastern-ontario-mines-minerals-symposium/

This one-day pre-symposium short course will highlight new results from Laurentian University’s Metal Earth program, where more than 1,000 km of reflection seismic, magnetotelluric, and gravity surveys have provided some of the highest-resolution imaging across transects with differing mineral endowments in granite-greenstone terranes across the Superior and Southern provinces.

Presentations by researchers from Laurentian's Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) and Metal Earth teams will detail the large-scale crustal architecture of endowed areas, as well as focused studies on deposits, along with structural and geochemical controls.

The contributions will emphasize the integration of field and laboratory geological, geochemical, and geophysical studies, providing new insights into the geological and metallogenic framework of endowed terranes, as well as the architecture of the structural conduits controlling the upward migration of melts and mineralizing hydrothermal fluids.

Presentations

9:00-9:45: John Ayer; Architecture and endowment of the Timmins & Larder Lake gold camps.

9:45-10:30: Jack Simmons; Archean metasedimentary belts and gold deposits of the Superior craton.

10:30-10:45: Break

10:45-11:30: Jonathan Sutton; Magmatic-hydrothermal gold in the Kirkland Lake camp: Insights from the Upper Beaver deposit.

11:30-12:15: Gyorgyi Tuba; Who let the gold out? A generalized model for hydrothermal Fluid Evolution and Gold mineralization in Orogenic Deposits.

12:15-1:00: Lunch

1:00-1:45: Taus R.C. Jørgensen; Assemblage and lithological compilations of the Abitibi Greenstone Belt and their use in assessing differential VMS endowment.

1:45-2:30: Keaton Strongman; The Architecture of an Archean Rift Network and Implications for Syn-Volcanic Metallogeny.

2:30-2:45: Break

2:45-3:30: Stefanie Brueckner; The Many Faces of VMS deposits: Exploration, Lithochemistry and Critical Metals.

3:30-4:15: Rasmus Haugaard; Deep drilling and geophysical evidence for a new large Ni-Cu-PGE ore deposit and impact structure in the northeastern part of the Sudbury basin

5:00: Reception at Sir Harry Oaks Chateau (museum) in Kirkland Lake
