Another great year ahead!

Welcome back to our students, researchers, faculty and staff, and a warm welcome to those who just joined the Harquail School of Earth Sciences!

Already this semester our students & researchers have been busy with 4 field schools, a public field trip to showcase Metal Earth recent findings, two student club field trips to Bancroft and Manitoulin Island, and conference attendance in Spain, Chile, Arizona and Timmins, Ontario.

Over the 2018-2019 academic school year, we celebrated over $143,000 in student scholarships and awards! We look forward to another rewarding year and keep encouraging our students to apply for scholarships for recognition of their hard work.

In this issue we welcome new faces, highlight student successes & research updates at the Harquail School of Earth Sciences including career and research opportunities available in 2020.

WELCOME INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENTS

Graduate students join the Harquail School from across seas! 1 MSc and 6 PhD candidates arrived in Sudbury earlier this summer under supervision of Dr. Michael Lesher,  Dr. Elizabeth Turner,  Dr. Bruno Lafrance and Dr. Graeme Spiers. Candidates traveled from various locations including Germany, Bahamas, France, Rwanda, Spain, and Brazil to advance research in the geosciences, part of which will contribute to the global research project Metal Earth that is led by the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC).

Welcome to Sudbury, Ontario, from the Harquail School of Earth Sciences!

Microanalytical Centre (MAC) Updates

The Microanalytical Centre (MAC) has been busy this past summer adding, creating, innovating with instrumentation designed to enhance research capacity at the Harquail School of Earth Sciences, Laurentian University.

Some updates include the addition of new SEM software (AZTEC Oxford), enhancement of CL instrumentation, addition of new imaging software for opaque-dominated PTS, and the addition of new(er) X-ray diffractometers (Bruker D8 systems). Prof Andrew McDonald , MAC Director and Rémy Poulin, Research Scientist outline significant updates to keep students and researchers informed.

STUDENT CLUBS
The 2019 annual Bancroft field trip group, comprising first-year Earth Science students to PhD candidates and Prof Andy McDonald, overlooking Unimin (Covia) Mine’s Nephton Plant during a mine tour and mineral collecting visit.

BANCROFT TRIP
SEPT 26-29, 2019
Students of all levels (1st year Earth Science students up to PhD students!) return from the annual field trip to Bancroft area! This geological excursion combines the mineralogy and geology of the Haliburton Highlands where Bancroft is situated. This year’s trip included a visit to the COVIA nepheline-syenite mine which is an industrial mine which produces material used in glass, construction, ceramics, coatings, polymers and foundry markets. The trip also targeted rocks of the Central Metasedimentary Belt for some world class mineral collecting. This trip is led by the Earth Science Club, Robert Meek, as well as Prof Andrew McDonald.

MANITOULIN ISLAND TRIP
SEPT 14, 2019
Students ranging from 2nd year to PhD recently participated in the first Laurentian University Earth Science Club field trip to Manitoulin Island. Led by Raymond Scott, a fourth year B.Sc. Earth Science student at Laurentian University, this trip educated the participants of the local stratigraphy of the area, while providing an excellent opportunity to collect fossils.
