Catharine Farrow, who led the MERC Advisory Board as Chair for the past four years, is stepping down for personal reasons. MERC has benefited greatly from Catharine’s guidance and enthusiastic support for mineral deposit research and student mentorship. We wish Catharine well in her future endeavours and thank her for her contributions to MERC, Metal Earth, and the Harquail School of Earth Sciences.

Dr. Stéphane Perrouty joined the Harquail School of Earth Sciences in 2018. His research focuses primarily on orogenic gold systems in Archean and Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts in Canada, West Africa, and South America.

Congratulations to Dr. Stéphane Perrouty, the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) Mineral Deposits Division (MDD) William Harvey Gross Award winner. This prestigious accolade is bestowed annually by the MDD to a geoscientist who is less than 40 years of age (as of December 31 of the nomination year) who has made a significant contribution to the field of economic geology in a Canadian context.

Kudos to MSc student Ian Campos, who was awarded a Society of Economic Geologists Foundation (SEG) Student Research Grant sponsored by the Newmont Mining Corporation in the amount of US $4,000.00.
Ian's research is on structural controls and auriferous alteration characteristics at the Magino gold deposit, Wawa subprovince.

SEG Special Publication: Volume II
The 8 papers in this open access volume further reflect the breadth of Jeremy Richards' influence in the areas of tectonics, magma genesis, and hydrothermal ore deposits. Available at no cost to the readers, the publication of Volume II (and the 9 papers previously published in Volume 1) are possible through the generous financial sponsorship of BHP Metals Exploration, the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) and Harquail School of Earth Sciences.

Fifth Anniversary of the MERC-IGL
This summer marks the 5th anniversary of the creation of MERC's Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory, which is a critical component in the Metal Earth geoscience research initiative. In that time, the state-of-the-art LA-ICP-MS facility has conducted in-situ U-Pb geochronology, Hf isotope, and trace element analyses for academic, survey, and industry clients, contributing to a wide range of geological research, mapping, and mineral exploration projects.
This spring, the Lab welcomed Kirk Ross, SEM Lab Technician to the team. His interests include compositional and structural characterization of natural and synthetic phases and phase mixtures by XRF, XRD, SEM-EDS and EPMA-EDS/WDS methods.
MERC thanks the Canada First Research Excellence Fund and the Harquail School of Earth Sciences for their partnership and support. Watch: Metal Earth: Building Research Capacity & Expertise
Contact Laboratory Director, Dr. Jeffrey Marsh, for details on our analytical facilities, services, LA-ICP-MS applications, and our contributions to recent research publications.

Mineral Exploration in Volcanic Terrains
August 21 - September 3, 2022
Led by Dr. Ross Sherlock, this 10- day course focuses on recognizing, describing, and mapping volcanic lithofacies, alteration types, mineralization, and deformation in a well-exposed Precambrian volcanic succession hosting base and precious metal deposits. The course is delivered as a mapping project with evening lectures and discussions following a one-day introductory field trip. An introduction to graphic core logging is provided. Mapping is conducted in teams, and grades are based on the map, structural cross-sections, and a final report, which includes a description and interpretation of the geology and structure and an assessment of exploration potential with recommendations.
