MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Greetings to all readers, and welcome (or welcome back) to all of our new and returning students.

We hope you had an enjoyable and productive summer and feel ready for the new academic year. Warm greetings to all members and friends of the Harquail School of Earth Sciences (HES).

As Director, I am pleased to introduce our summer 2023 Newsletter, which summarizes relevant and recent highlights and keeps you updated on ongoing initiatives that make Laurentian University and HES the best place to study geology.

Looking back on the past few months, we welcomed more than 700 geologists and students to our campus for GAC-MAC-SGA. It was a very successful conference!

We are adding a full-time faculty position in Critical Minerals to our School to advance research and teaching. We also said farewell to Dr. Alessandro Ielpi, who has elected to take a new position at UBC, and we are fondly remembering Dr. Bruce Jago, who passed away this month. We're also running undergraduate and graduate field schools, modular courses, and wrapping up summer fieldwork.

As September brings a new semester, we look forward to meeting new students and welcoming them to our School. Please share this newsletter with your colleagues and friends, and send us your feedback. We always appreciate hearing from you.

Pedro Jugo
Director, Harquail School of Earth Sciences

REMEMBERING DR. BRUCE JAGO
Colleagues, students, alumni, family, and friends are remembering Dr. Bruce Jago, PhD, PGeo, who passed away peacefully on August 5, 2023, at age 66.

The founding executive director of Laurentian University's Goodman School of Mines (GSM), Dr. Jago joined Laurentian in 2013 and led the School for six years. During his tenure, he created many new partnerships, scholarships and training opportunities for LU, attracted international students, and started the Goodman Gold Challenge. The GSM continues to support programs across the mining life cycle, from Earth Sciences to Indigenous Relations. After his time at GSM, Dr. Jago continued at Laurentian as a Full Professor in the Harquail School of Earth Sciences.

Dr. Jago was widely recognized as a leader in his industry and regarded as an exceptional geologist.

Harquail School of Earth Sciences researchers, Canadian industry partners and international collaborators were awarded a two-year NSERC Alliance Grant on the "Stratigraphy and Gold Metallogeny of the Guiana Shield." The grant, complementary to the AMIRA's Project P1061B - South American Exploration Initiative, will support a postdoctoral fellow and graduate students at Laurentian University. The project aims at updating and integrating the geology of the Guiana Shield. It represents the first sustained collaborative effort at integrating and modernizing the geology of the Guiana Shield since the 1970s, seeking to overcome the scientific isolation caused by colonial-era divisions of the region between five different countries, each with a different language and culture. For details, contact Dr. Stéphane Perrouty at sperrouty@laurentian.ca.
Dr. Andrew M. McDonald has received a new 5-year NSERC Discovery Grant, "Insights into the evolution of critical-metal deposits through mineralogy and crystal chemistry." The funds will enable Dr. McDonald to continue his research into the geology, geochemistry and crystallization of platinum-group minerals, Ni-and Co-bearing base-metal sulfides and indicator minerals applicable to the exploration for Cu-Mo-Au porphyry systems. For details, email Dr. Andrew McDonald at amcdonald@laurentian.ca.

GEOSCIENCE OUTREACH & RECRUITMENT
ACTIVITY SUMMARY
As the fall semester begins, we reflect on a productive year engaging with prospective students, teachers, and families. First, we want to thank our students, faculty, and staff for their support in representing HES. We couldn't do it without them. We are planning another recruitment season, as well as our PDAC and conference activities, and we welcome your help and ideas.

From July 2022-2023, HES engaged with more than 1500 prospective students worldwide through interactive sessions and events online and in-person, at conferences, gem and mineral shows, in schools, and on campus.

In addition, in summer 2023, 400 elementary school students visited Laurentian University and the Harquail School of Earth Sciences for geoscience activities through the Electrifying the Future summer camp program. The free program builds awareness of post-secondary programs that lead to careers in the electric vehicle supply chain, from mineral exploration to the automotive and mobility industry.

In 2023, we started an online webinar series called Geology Games to make our events more accessible. These webinars attracted another 200 participants through the end of June 2023. With these events, on top of open houses, university fairs, call campaigns, geology and mineral exploration conferences like PDAC and GAC-MAC-SGA Sudbury, and STEM learning events such as MineOpportunity and the WISE Sudbury Science and Engineering Career Café, we have been very engaged with the public.

Teachers, parents, and students are always encouraged to contact us to coordinate class field trips and online Earth Science sessions. We are happy to oblige!
We are grateful for the support of our students, colleagues, faculty, alumni, and staff who assist in delivering these experiences, which inspire students to discover the field of geoscience and the opportunities that come with studying at our School.
