Earth Sciences BSc students invited to apply for $20,000 scholarships

February 8, 2023  Prospective students who have been offered admission into our undergraduate 4-year Earth Sciences program for September 2023 are encouraged to apply for a Harquail School of Earth Sciences (HES) BSc Scholarship.

This fall, four scholarships will be awarded to eligible full-time students registered in our Earth Sciences program. An eligible BSc student may receive up to $20,000 through this renewable scholarship program over the course of their 4-year degree, typically disbursed at $5,000 per academic year.

The criteria for applicants are the same as in previous years: a minimum average of 75% and a short letter (no more than 500 words) describing why they chose to study Earth Sciences at Laurentian University.  Scholarship application deadlines have not yet been announced, but the School is accepting scholarship applications now. Students must email their letter to hes@laurentian.ca to apply.

2023 HES BSc Scholarships Open to Applicants

October 19, 2022  Prospective students offered admission into our undergraduate 4-year Earth Sciences program for fall 2023 are encouraged to consider applying for a HES BSc Scholarship.

In September 2023, a number of these scholarships will be awarded to eligible full-time students registered in our Earth Sciences program. An eligible BSc student may receive up to $20,000 through this renewable scholarship program over the course of their 4-year degree, typically disbursed at $5,000 per academic year.

Fall 2022 HES BSc Scholarships now open for applications

Four $5,000 scholarships will be available for eligible first-year students who register for fall 2022 studies in our BSc Earth Sciences program

Students must submit a short letter describing why they chose to study Earth Sciences at Laurentian University. The deadline to apply for this scholarship is March 30, 2022.

The Harquail BSc Scholarships were generously established by the Harquail Family to support student success at the Harquail School of Earth Sciences. 

2022 Eligibility Criteria

Four student scholarships shall be granted to eligible undergraduate students who are registered full-time in the first year of the BSc Earth Sciences program at Laurentian University’s Harquail School of Earth Sciences. 

Student recipients receiving scholarships must have achieved a 75% average or higher in their previous year of study. Financial need may be considered, but it is not an eligibility requirement. Successful applicants are chosen by a committee of faculty and one person from the Awards office. Awards not distributed in the fall term may be made available for winter term applicants. 

How to Apply

  1. Apply to the BSc Earth Sciences program at Laurentian University.
  2. In no more than 500 words, write a letter that describes your academic and/or professional goals and explain why you are motivated to study Earth Sciences at Laurentian University.
  3. Email your letter to hes@laurentian.ca no later than March 30, 2022, with the subject line: Harquail BSc Scholarship Application.

2021 Scholarships Still Available - Act Now!

Three $5,000 scholarships are available for first-year BSc Earth Sciences students who entered the program in fall 2021 or are entering the BSc Earth Sciences program in winter 2022 (starting the program in January 2022). Applicants are required to submit a CV (résumé) and a letter of no more than 500 words detailing why they chose to study Earth Sciences at Laurentian University. The CV and letter must be emailed to hes@laurentian.ca by November 15, 2021 the extended deadline of December 6, 2021, with the subject line: 2021 Harquail BSc Scholarship Application. Harquail Family supports students with $50K in new scholarships

DECEMBER 18, 2020 - Update to the original announcement for winter term applicants: There are 4 remaining scholarships for students who apply and register for our BSc programs in the upcoming winter term. If you are eligible, apply as soon as possible for early consideration.  

As we prepare to welcome new students for fall studies, we have some great news!

Ten new scholarships, valued at $5,000 each, are available for eliglible undergraduate students registered in first or second year studies in either Environmental Geoscience or Earth Sciences (Geology) in the 2020-2021 academic year. The deadline to apply for a scholarship for fall term studies is Monday, August 10, 2020.

Awards are still available for winter term studies - apply now!

The new Harquail BSc Scholarships were generously established by David Harquail and Family to help students start and continue their education at the Harquail School of Earth Sciences. Successful first-year recipients may reapply to receive the scholarship in their second year of study. 

2020-2021 Eligibility Criteria

Eight (8) student scholarships shall be granted to undergraduate students who are registered full-time in the first year of either the BSc Earth Sciences or BSc Environmental Geoscience programs at Laurentian University’s Harquail School of Earth Sciences. Two (2) student scholarships will be awarded to eligible students in their second year of studies. Of the total 10 scholarships granted, four (4) will be renewable if the initial first-year recipients re-apply in second year, and continue to meet award criteria.

Student recipients receiving scholarships must have achieved an “A” (80%) average or higher in their previous year of study. Student recipients receiving renewable scholarships must maintain an “A” average or higher and maintain full-time student status in the indicated programs in order to continue to meet eligibility. A selection committee of faculty members shall be responsible for selecting eight (8) recipients entering their eligible program in Fall semester and the final two (2) recipients entering their eligible program in Winter/Spring semester.

How to Apply

In 500 words, applicants must explain why they chose to study Earth Sciences, and describe some of their academic and/or professional goals. This write-up must be emailed to hes@laurentian.ca with the subject line "Harquail BSc Scholarship Application" no later than August 10, 2020 for fall term studies. Awards not distributed for fall term will be available for winter term applicants. Please note that financial need may be considered, but it is not an eligibility requirement. Successful applicants will be chosen by a committee of faculty and one person from the Awards office.
