2021 PDAC-SEG Student Minerals Colloquium - March 8-11

Annual Student Minerals Colloquium (SMC) Going Virtual in 2021!

PDAC, the SEG Canada Foundation, the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC), and the Goodman School of Mines, in cooperation with SEG Student Chapters at Laurentian University and the Ottawa-Carleton Geoscience Centre, will host the Annual Student Minerals Colloquium (SMC) virtually between Monday, March 8, and Thursday, March 11.

The SMC brings together geoscience students and industry professionals at PDAC, which is the world's largest minerals and mining industry conference.

For the first time in its history, the Colloquium will be held virtually, featuring more than 100 poster presentations highlighting current research on mineral deposits and related studies by students from around the world.

Students who would like to present a poster at the event and participate in the virtual competition must register. The (now extended) call for abstracts closes at midnight EST on January 22, 2021. Visit https://merc.laurentian.ca/seg-smc-register for details.

Industry Participation

The Student Minerals Colloquium (SMC) provides industry professionals with an unparalleled opportunity to support ongoing student (BSc. (Hons)., MSc., PhD.) research relating to the mining industry. By attending the SMC, industry professionals will gain useful insight into current projects being undertaken by students across the world. The research presentations will cover a wide variety of topics, including gold deposits, base metal deposits, geophysics, environmental sustainability, experimental studies, and more. Please contact the SMC Planning Committee (smc@laurentian.caif you are interested in becoming a sponsor of the event or if you would like to join the judging panel.

Student Participation

All students (BSc, MSc, PhD) working on projects with a link to mineral deposits (e.g. mapping, mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics, environmental, hydrogeology, etc.) are encouraged to participate by either registering a poster for the competition or by attending the colloquium to support student research. Students working on projects with a link to mineral deposits will present their research to an audience of academics, students, and industry professionals in poster and a short pre-recorded video presentation. The SMC attracts hundreds of industry participants attending PDAC, and therefore provides the widest possible exposure for current research. Posters and the accompanying videos will be judged by a panel of academics and industry professionals. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners in a range of categories.

All posters and video presentations must be in English and be accompanied by an abstract, which will be published on this webpage in a format that is citable. Instructions to submit abstracts are below, along with details on poster and video formatting. If you have further questions, please contact smc@laurentian.ca.

To participate in the Student Minerals Colloquium (SMC) with a poster, video presentation and abstract, students are required to register and submit an abstract prior to midnight (12:00 a.m. EST) on January 22, 2021. (Deadline extension to January 22 in effect as of January 13, 2021)

Registration information and abstract guidelines are available on the student registration page.

We look forward to seeing you at the 2021 Student Minerals Colloquium!
