5 OctDavid Harquail New Chair of the World Gold Council
Congratulations to David Harquail for his appointment as new Chair of the World Gold Council (WGC). Faculty, students, researchers and staff at the Harquail School of Earth Sciences and its Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) are thrilled about this news and wish David all the best.
In 2016, David Harquail’s family foundation announced a $10-million investment in Laurentian University’s Department of Earth Sciences and Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC). The funding, which is being used to support new research chairs, lab equipment, technical support, and scholarships, is driving new and creative concepts that will lead to the next generation of mines. The school was renamed The Harquail School of Earth Sciences in recognition of Mr. Harquail’s leadership.
"The WGC has made an excellent choice in naming David as its next Chair,” said Dr. Douglas Tinkham, Director of the Harquail School of Earth Sciences. “His contribution to our university and our students has gone well above a financial donation. David’s visionary approach to mineral exploration has been an asset to Laurentian’s research leadership in the field, and will serve the WGC well over the next four years."
Situated in one of Canada’s richest mining regions, The Harquail School of Earth Sciences and its Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) constitutes an unparalleled learning environment in ore deposits, structural geology, geophysics, mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology and environmental geosciences. Housed in the ultra-modern Willet Green Miller Centre, the School’s faculty and students have won several prestigious awards, including three Duncan Derry Medals of the Geological Association of Canada’s Mineral Deposits Division.
