Laurentian University geoscientist wins national award for contributions to economic geology

Dr. Stéphane Perrouty is the Geological Association of Canada (GAC) Mineral Deposits Division (MDD) William Harvey Gross Award winner.

This prestigious accolade is bestowed annually by the MDD to a geoscientist who is less than 40 years of age, and who has made a significant contribution to the field of economic geology in a Canadian context.

Perrouty joined Laurentian University’s Harquail School of Earth Sciences in 2018. His research focuses primarily on orogenic gold systems in Archean and Paleoproterozoic greenstone belts in Canada, West Africa, and South America.

This summer, Perrouty is leading continued fieldwork with the Metal Earth project, along with PhD students Théo Lombard and Lianna Vice.

He’s also accepting and reviewing applications from students who are interested in working at the MSc and PhD level on an NSERC-funded Precambrian tectonics project: Metamorphic evolution of the Winnipeg River gneisses, Ontario, Canada.

For Perrouty, studying and working in geology is more than a career, it’s a calling. He adores being outdoors in summer, playing with trucks, ATVs, boats, and drones, as well as using the latest technology and tools in research, learning about Earth’s evolution, and expanding knowledge of mineral systems.

He is also the coordinator of the MSc Geology program at Laurentian University's Harquail School of Earth Sciences and welcomes inquiries from students interested in taking the program.
